7/27/2023 0 Comments Los alamos daily post circulation![]() While in Los Alamos, Bill was active in various youth sports programs, enjoyed skiing at Pajarito Ski Hill and served as the deacon of benevolence in the Los Alamos Church of Christ.īill served as the NCAR Computing Director from 1987 through 1998 at which time he married Katherine Wise of Westminster, CO. He rose to the Deputy Division Director before accepting the Director of Computing position at the National Center for Atmospheric Research (NCAR), in Boulder Colorado in 1987. His early work and professional contacts led to a one-year sabbatical as an instructor at the Chalmers Institute of Technology in Gothenburg, Sweden during the 1973-1974 academic year, in which time he also enjoyed touring Northern Europe with his family of five in a compact three-door Fiat 128.īill returned to LANL management in 1974, continued publications in numerous magazines (Science, IEEE, SIAM, Time), and was designated to the White House Science Council Committee on Research in Very High Performance Computing and to the National Research Council’s Committee on Supercomputer Performance and Development between 1982-1984. Shortly after joining C-Division, he began working on his PhD in Numerical Analysis at the University of New Mexico and completed it in 1972. The couple quickly relocated to Los Alamos to begin careers at Los Alamos National Laboratory after their wedding.īill started his career at the Laboratory in the Theoretical Division before he joined the newly formed Computing Division in 1968. Also during this period, while working for Texaco Research in Houston, Bill met another attractive mathematician, Glenda Calvert, whom he became extremely interested in and eventually married in 1962. ![]() In 1955 he joined the US Air Force as a linguist and received orders to the Army Language School in Monterrey, CA, providing him his first opportunity to leave Texas and enjoy a relatively cool West coast climate as well as a “real library” before serving tours in Korea and Japan.Īfter separating from the Air Force in 1958, he attended the University of Texas on the GI Bill and received both his Bachelor and Master’s degrees between 1959-1962. ![]() A lifelong lover of music, Bill gravitated to high school marching band, received all-district honors and was elected band president before graduating from Cross Plains High School in 1954 (later in life he became an addict of the 70’s variety show “Hee-Haw” due to his country music roots and the humor/talent of Buck Owens and Roy Clark). His early years were spent in rural farm life and in work as a roustabout in the surrounding oil fields. He was 85.īill was born in Gorman, Texas in 1936 to Elzie Lewis Buzbee and Willie Mae Buzbee, dry-land farmers who survived the depression and dust bowl periods in West Texas.
